Guiding Questions
To guide our research, we created the following questions:
problem of practice
How can we foster a student-centered classroom to value and recognize equity vs. equality?
equity-based research question
How can we incorporate voice and choice while supporting students to have access to any problem, but also, meet students where they are?
what do we want students to learn?
Our content understanding goals are:
- Students will understand a comparison relationship with an unknown difference (numbers) and understand a relationship between addition and subtraction (algebra).
- Students will understand that they have access to a multitude of mathematical strategies to solve problems.
who are our focus students?
For this lesson, I am focusing on 2 students. Student A is a student who is currently performing at or above grade level. He is a student who is learning to expand his possibilities. How can I encourage this student to pursue a challenge? Student B is a student who, when supported, can complete his math problems. When he is not supported, he can have difficulty reading the problems, choosing how to ask for support, or how to begin. For both of these students, this lesson is meant to show them possible strategies and increase their mathematical representations on their worksheets.

Theory of ActionIf we make students' innovative thinking visible while students are grappling with subtraction in a real-world context, then students will have multiple modes of access to the problem while seeing value in their peers and their own mathematical thinking.
To assess it's effectiveness, we'll informally observe students as they grapple to solve the math problem and if they refer to the previous story problem for a new strategy. This will also be observed during our individual Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles. |

To put into practice all of our learning, we decided to use cognitively guided instruction (CGI) to help us increase access for our students. For me, this is a routine that is already in place and I would love to learn more about how to best support all students.
Our story problem (day 2 of 2) was:
